The Underdogs (books 1 & 2), by Kate & Jol Temple; illustrated by Shiloh Gordon

"I really like these books because they make me laugh. I like that there is a mystery to solve, it keeps me interested in the story. The pictures are really cool too. If you like dogs and a mystery story that's also funny then you'll like these books." (Max, 7).

We are huge fans of the Underdog series. We loved the suspense, the humour, and the engaging illustrations.

These books are suitable for such a large age range - perfect read aloud books for younger readers who aren't reading independently yet, and also a great choice for newly independent readers and beyond.

With lots of illustrations breaking up the text and easy-to-read text font, these books are visually appealing and young readers will want to pick them up off the shelves.

In book 1 (The Underdogs Catch a Cat Burglar) we meet Fang the scruffy street cat, who joins the ragtag team of dog detectives, the Underdogs, helping them on their quest to sniff out the mysterious cat burglar. Will they crack the case?

In book 2 (Fake it Till They Make It) Fang and Barkley are on a mission to find out who swapped Puplo Pawcasso's famous paintings with imitations - but they need to crack the case before the Top Dogs return from their ski trip!

We love the quirky characters, the rollicking adventure, the suspense and the humour in both these books. Max particularly enjoyed trying to guess who the culprit was in each book (encourages predicting and trying to solve problems) and he raced through to get to the end. His friends are enjoying these books too. They would make great gifts for young readers.

This series is highly recommended and we can't wait for the next exciting instalment!
